Dwell on Design - 3 Palms & LivingHome
/I had the opportunity to attend the annual Dwell on Design convention this past weekend and admire all things new in design. A 3 Palms panel was held on the last day, where the newly completed LEED Platinum project was dissected and discussed.
3 Palms is admirably a net-zero energy, passive design beach house sporting cutting-edge technology such radiant heating and photovoltaic solar panels--basically the designer's "Dream Green Home." Many of the design specs, drawings, and models can be found on their site, http://3palmsproject.com/ .
I heard about the talk through my professor, John Turturro, who worked on 3 Palms as the project designer alongside Bryan Henson, the builder of the 2,450 SF home. John also mentioned the possibility of future tours, an event I would jump at with legal pad, pencil topper, and my best Steve Urkel note-taking impression in tow. Stay tuned for any potential 3 Palm tour updates, folks!

Designer talk aside, my inner fangirl came out upon meeting the homeowner, Bryan Cranston, who plays Walter White in the hit television series, Breaking Bad. Considering this to be one of my favorite shows, withholding excited squeals proved fruitless when it came down to photo ops, but Mr. Cranston had such an approachable and giving attitude about him. After all, he did open up his own home to the public, giving thousands in the design community a chance to probe and examine such a personal part of his life as our case study.
The excitement of that day didn't end there. In the past, my partner and I had discussed the option of purchasing a pre-fab home as our first abode. Lo and behold: LivingHome's c6.1 model, a charming 1,288 SF space equipped with 3 beds, 2 baths, and a LEED Platinum rating. Did I mention that this model was created with young, starting couples in mind in regards to cost, square footage, and functionality? Sold! At least mentally, anyway.
